An increase of news reports coming out of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) the last few days reveal the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis is much larger than first thought. The death rate continues to climb to an estimated 100,000 with others still missing, and as many as 1 million people homeless.
Myanmar is controlled by a secretive military junta which specializes in human rights abuses designed to repress the people. The government is just now officially allowing international aid to arrive in the country. The first UN relief plane landed today (Thursday) with more on the way. The Myanmar government was very slow in granting entry visas for international relief efforts.
I am aware that some Samaritan’s Purse staff arrived in Myanmar on Monday (two days after the cyclone hit) because they already had plans to visit the country. That organization–along with many other relief agencies–are mobilizing efforts to assist the people of Myanmar, once their government will allow relief workers to enter.
Our CGGC Eastern Region has announced that funds can be sent to their treasurer (designated for “Myanmar Cyclone Relief”) which will then be forwarded to the Mennonite Central Committee for disbursement.
Churches outside the Eastern Region are encouraged to send relief assistance directly to Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607. Or you may go directly to the Samaritan’s website and donate online: www.samaritanspurse.org/MP_article.asp?ArticleID=158.
And most of all…pray for the people of Myanmar. I am fully aware that God works through natural disasters such as this to “open doors” so that that people may hear the truth and come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Pray for Christian relief workers to demonstrate sensitivity to the government authorities, yet provide a living witness to Christ’s love that will be undeniable to those who are helped.
Thank you for your generous response.
Blessed to be a blessing,
Pastor Don Dennison, Director

Report from Moldova

Igor Ribca pastors a church in the village of Gura Bicului but also serves on the Moldova Facilitation Team to advance the church planting vision and training in his country. The CGGC began providing monthly support for the Ribcas as a result of our involvement with the Alliance for Saturation Church Planting in Eastern Europe. We continue with that investment today through (CC 2829) Moldova Leadership Development.
When we became aware that the Gura Bicului church building needed a new roof and other repairs, more than $4,750 was given by Eastern Region churches in 2007 to fund the project. We received a letter of thanks from Igor in March. Here is a portion of his translation:
”I am so glad that God blessed our church through your support. We feel your encouragement through this support for our church, our family, and our ministry. Thank you for all the money you sent.
We are very glad that God heard the prayers of our church and blessed us with the money for the roof through you all. This was not easy, because God led us through our faith to wait upon Him. When the first amount was sent in December, it was not enough money. In January, our church held a 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting. Through this prayer time, God showed us His power and how He could answer our prayers. We soon received word that the rest of the money we needed for this roof was being sent to us. We now know that the way of the Lord is the way of faith.
We are now ready to begin this work on the roof. I want to encourage all who contributed to this support so that our church can be a blessing in the name of the Lord in Gura Bicului for the salvation of many people in our village.”
